Berlin Masters Nov 24th Nov  2007

Schonenfeld airport welcomed the old men from the city club once more on a dark late Friday evening.

Phil, Gary, Neil, Big Nigel & Prof Phil landed around 10.00pm, the airport Hotel just a stones throw away!

One hour later getting lost 3 times the airport was a stones throw away but we had hurled ourselves in the hire car the opposite direction, not a good prep for  the next day.

After savouring a couple of the German night caps, we all, retired a good rest was needed for the competition in the morning.

After a good breakfast the weigh in for the masters was 11.00am to 11.30am, plenty of time as the Google map indicated the venue was 15 minutes at the most from our hotel.

All systems go we headed off to the comp, with plenty of time to spare, 2 hours later we arrived! Just making the weigh in.

Nigel & Neil carried injuries so Phil, Gary & prof Phil carried the flag for the city club.

Phil started first, his first opponent was twice open weight Para Olympic  champion, Phil fought hard coming close  with the left seoi nage, but losing to a skilful experienced competitor. Phil eventually winning 2 out of 5 narrowly missing out on  a bronze medal.

Prof Phil had  a really tough group losing all of his fights but putting in a valiant effort.

Gary had no competitors at his own weight or age to fight so he had a few friendly fights, winning a couple & losing to The Austrian 90 kilo player.

The old boys where  invited to  a slap up celebratory meal in old Berlin, thoroughly enjoying the SV Luftfahrt hospitality.

Arriving At East Midlands late Sunday evening tired but enthused by a great weekend.

Nottingham Judokwai Welcomes our friends from Chemnitz!

On Thursday 4th Oct Tilo, Mario & Anja our good German friends arrived with 14 junior Judoka's all eager to experience English judo & culture.

The team was based at Kirkby in Ashfield, where they liaised with a local sports college using their running facilities for a pre breakfast run everyday!

Gary & Phil took time to ensure that our friends trained at a variety of Judo venues starting at the Nottingham judokwai Friday evening, followed on Saturday with  a trip to Newcastle to the Great Northern Open Judo Championships where they took 9 medals, 6 of them gold, fantastic display of judo. Arriving late back Saturday, Sunday was a more relaxed day with a visit to Major Oak.

Monday day was sight seeing in Nottingham, the evening was  cracking session at Ollerton judo club, many thanks to Jonathan Boswell for making our friends so welcome.

Long Eaton Judo club hosted the Tuesday evening session, Daz as ever pushing everyone hard, coaching superbly.

A trip to Portland judo club Wednesday rounded off the week stay in Kirkby.

After a tidy up at their accommodation they took off to London for a couple of days for sight seeing, also we recommended that they have a trip to Dartford judo club to see their fantastic Space age judo centre.

Thanks to everyone who took the time & effort to make our German friends welcome.

Bedford Grading Sept 9th 07

Veteran Neil & young boy Russell travelled with the 3 wise Monkeys down to the Bedford grading (Gary, Andy and Phil).

Phil & Andy arrived in ample time but Gary, Neil and Russell barely made the weigh in time due to Gary's stupendous directional navigational abilities.

Only Russell & Neil where competing. First up was Russell who disposed of his first opponent with  a tremendous Osoto/maka koni technique, beautiful ippon.

Neil followed the winning vein with  lovely ouchi gari, both players where cooking.

Next up was Russ who continued his explosive ippon' s with a powerful left ippon seio nage, two fights two good wins.

Neil  fought next against a much tougher opponent (2nd kyu) who managed to force a draw.

The best judo in the green/blue belt category came from the Nottingham boys!

To everyone's disappointment the table decided to put the boys against each other bearing in mind that they are from the same club, same club number and in  a pool of 20 people , scandalous, anyway the fight turned out to be cracker with each player showing true determination & skill.

Neil eventually caught Russ with a nice tani toshi in the last seconds of the contest.

Both men came back with a well deserved top blue belt.

The the wise monkeys travelled home sated.

well done lads!

19 May '07 High Wycombe Masters Tournament

It was an early start for Phil Aylward & Colin Brearly to make the weigh in for the Wycombe masters.

Colin was in his coaching capacity (due to an injury).

Familiar faces upon arrival indicated that the competition would be tough.

A pool of twelve made up the 100kg group.

Phil was up  with a yuko score within the first minute in his first fight, managing to hold on to the 5 point score to win.

The  second fight was  a close contest unfortunately losing by a shido,  a false attack, he then redeemed himself in the next 2 fights winning by yuko in the 3rd & ippon in the 4th picking up ten  valuable grading points. This then pushed him into the repercharge final where he lost by ippon.

Well done to Phil, narrowly missing out on a medal in a very tough competition, & many thanks to Colin for his excellent coaching & support.

Northwest Open Masters February 2007

The Boys travelled up to St Helens to perform in the Northwest Masters 2007.

First up was Phil Aylward, losing his first contest winning his second  and a hard draw in the third coming away with a hard fought Bronze.

Gary Mellors & Jason Dutton, both being in the same weight category -81kg, Jason was on the mat first against the European masters silver medallist, the fight turned in to a brutal contest with both players sustaining head injuries. The fight went against Jason being thrown with an almighty shoulder throw.

Gary was up next, winning with a drop seio- nage, his next opponent was the European masters silver medallist, the fight went 2.30 minutes when Gary was thrown also with a massive seio-nage.

Jason won his next fight comfortably with  a pick up.

The final fight for the silver between Jason & Gary ended with Jason countering Gary's uchi-mata for ippon. Jason coming away with the silver & Gary Bronze.
